The village of Kumarakom is a cluster of little islands on the Vembanad Lake, this small village is part of the Kuttanad region. Egrets, darters, herons, teal, waterfowl, cuckoo, wild duck and other exotic migratory birds like the Siberian stork that live here in flocks are a fascination for any visitors. The best way to watch the birds of the Kumarakom sanctuary is while having a boat trip around the islands.

Popular ways to move aroun here in Kumarakom are the Boat trains - formed by joining two or more houseboats together - make for a convenient mode of sightseeing when the company is large. The more adventurous could perhaps indulge in water sports such as windsailing and water skating. You could also take a canoe out into the quite lagoons and spend time angling. Make sure you sample Karimeen and fresh toddy - the favourite fresh water food and the local wine.
